About Ryan

What led you to a job at Zipline Interactive?
I have always known I wanted to be an entrepreneur.  I developed a love for web design while working on building a couple of other small retail businesses.  At the time, I needed websites for my businesses but couldn't afford to pay someone to make one, so I figured out how.  Once I learned, I ended up deciding I liked the web design and marketing aspects of what I was doing more than the rest of the business. I shifted focus and built my own web design company.  I later sold this company to my first employer and went to work for this larger web design company. Through this experience, I met Shawn and we jointly realized that we could build websites that weren't just a brochure but were actually business tools that helped businesses be more successful.

Do you believe Al Gore invented the Internet?
No. This one has always cracked me up. Al Gore didn't invent the internet. I will give him some credit though; in the early days of the internet, he was one of a very small group of politicians to see and understand its importance.

What is your favorite part of working in digital advertising?
I like that just about everything we do is trackable. It is so awesome to be able to see if what you're doing is actually moving the needle because if it isn't, we can do something else that will.  I have never liked that traditional advertising is so difficult to track.  You might spend a fortune to put out a TV campaign or a radio ad, but you have to guess and trust your gut on whether it works or not.  With digital, we know down to the dollar what works and what doesn't.

Outside of digital advertising, what is your dream job?
I am going to give two answers for this one too. My historical dream job has always been to be park ranger. As a child, I always wanted to be a police officer.  But when I got older, I loved fishing, landscape photography, and hiking and decided that I really wanted to be a park ranger because that merged all my passions into one awesome career.  By the time I was headed to college, I had decided that I wanted to be a business owner and moved in that direction.

Now, my new dream job would be running a completely different type of business.  I love web design and marketing but a part of me would enjoy the challenge of running something I don't know much about, like owning a construction company or some type of retail store. I know that heading in this direction would stretch me tremendously and that I would learn a ton. Overall, I think it is more about the adventure than the job.  I would just need a job with adventure built in.

What is your favorite thing about working at Zipline?
I love getting to know businesses at an intimate level.  As someone drawn to entrepreneurship from a young age, it is fascinating for me to dig into different types of businesses. To build an effective website or run an effective campaign, we have to understand the inner workings of our clients' businesses.  I really enjoy sitting down with our customers to talk through the fundamentals of how their business works. I enjoy visiting their factories and stores to see how raw materials turn into products.  Really, I love to learn and this is such a fun and rewarding way to do it.

What do you do when you’re not at work?
When I'm not at work, you can almost certainly find me hanging out with my family. I have a beautiful wife and a son and I spend as much time as I possibly can with them.

What is the craziest thing you’ve ever done?
I have actually had a lot of adventures.  I'm not sure which would classify as the craziest but the one that comes to mind is probably something I shouldn't write down.

What is something most people don’t know about you?
I was once a bridesmaid.

What is your favorite TV show or movie?
I would say that currently, my favorite TV show is Blue Bloods. As a guy that always wanted to be a cop and loves his family, Blue Bloods is a great blend of both of those things.

Who is your idol?
I have two primary idols. One is my dad, and the other is my grandpa. From my dad, I got just about my entire personality.  He is an honest, hard working man with a great sense of humor. I do my best every day to be the same.  From my grandpa, I got love for entrepreneurship and adventure. I am a good mixture of these two men and I am very thankful that I was fortunate enough to grow up with such great role models.
