Last week was a busy week at Zipline. We brought to town one of the most infamous designers in the United States, Aaron Draplin. Aaron is a very passionate and talented designer who has been a part of hundreds of exciting projects. Aaron is originally from Michigan but now resides in Portland, where he operates the Draplin Design Company.
Aaron is best known for his videos, particularly one where he passionately discusses the travesty of motel paying $15k to change its sign from a beautiful, old, iconic piece of art to one that is standard, boring, and plain with poor typography. Aaron is also known for his Field Notes brand. Field Notes is a brand of small paper notebooks, intended to be carried with you wherever you go. Modeled after the popular pocket notebooks of yesteryear, his Field Notes books are popular with everyone, from major brands like J.Crew, to movie legends like the late John Hughes. In fact, Aaron has become such a big deal that he will be speaking at the Super Bowl for designers, the HOW Conference in June 2012.
Since we were the organizers of the event, we got the opportunity to spend quite a bit of time with Aaron, while he was in town. We had a great time hanging out with him, picking his brain about design, clients, and business. He was a sharp guy with a lot of great insight, built from 20 years in the design industry. He has a lot of exciting projects coming up that we can’t share but if you came to the event and enjoyed what he had to say, rest assured, more Aaron is on the way.
While he was here entertaining us at Zipline, he also entertained quite a few of our area designers. The official event, which was put on by AAF Spokane, was one of the largest in its history. Aaron drew designers from as far away away as Billings, Montana to the A Club here in Spokane! Everyone who came left inspired to do their job better whether they were designers, developers, or accountants. Aaron’s passion for good design and hard work is contagious, and his talk was the most inspiring I have ever attended. If you didn’t make it to the event, you missed out!
